Annual Spring Meeting Info

Update: March 31, 2006

VWS Last minute reminders and requests-Spring meeting

SPRING FORWARD!

Sheryl has kindly reminded us that on Sunday morning we set our clocks an hour ahead. Sleepyheads beware!

REQUEST: Due to allergies and sensitivities amongst our members, please refrain from wearing scented products and perfumes to the meeting. It will be much appreciated.

We will have over 60 attendees at this meeting! We have been re-located to a larger room- look for signs or ask at the desk where we will be.
PALETTES OF VERMONT: If you’ve painted one and feel like bringing it, please do. If you don’t have a palette yet, I understand you can get one from any Chittenden bank. Or you can now buy one for $4.50. Go here for more info:

http://www.vermontartscouncil.org/palettes/for_artists.html?id=233

I don’t know at this point if we can get a batch for VWS for free, but I doubt it- I didn’t perceive much interest in the idea , but we can discuss it at the meeting. Individuals might still like to hook up with a local display or organization:

http://www.vermontartscouncil.org/palettes/for_artists.html?id=233#LOCATOR

Barbara Storrs is the co-ordinator for the Black River Art Guild in Ludlow, and I have written Pentangle Council for the Arts in Woodstock about a group show.
It has been suggested that doing watercolor on the new watercolor canvas and gluing it to the palette might work well.

WHIMSY SHOW in WOODSTOCK…comes down today. Be sure to get your work picked up on time.

Joan White has alerted us to this great article about the Whimsy show from the Rutland Herald Sunday Magazine:

Update: March 23, 2006

I spoke to the Cortina Inn about final arrangements yesterday, and they would like to know by March 29 how many people would like a VEGETARIAN meal at the luncheon. Chicken stir-fry with rice is on the menu, but tofu can be substituted for chicken if we know in advance. Please let me know your preference, ONLY if you wish to choose vegetarian. Thanks.

Judy Laliberte has very kindly offered to pick up paintings for people from the Woodstock show and bring them to the meeting. Please let her know by Wednesday, March 29 if you would like her to do that. Thank you Judy!

Update - March 22
Greetings-
It doesn’t look or feel much like spring at the moment, so I guess we’ll just have to make our own festivities at or Spring meeting/luncheon. Perhaps in a few days we will be seeing daffodils and steam coming from the sugarhouses. Which is my roundabout way of reminding you that it’s time to get those checks in to Marlene to reserve your spot at the meeting.. We are hoping to get them all by March 25th- that’s this coming Saturday. If you have a last-minute urge to go but haven’t sent a check by the 25th, be sure to call me or Marlene and send the check ASAP or pay at the meeting. But you have to make a commitment to pay if you say you are coming, even if you don’t show up. We need to let the Inn know before Thursday, March 30 how many are going to attend.

Upcoming Workshops

From Annette Compton:

Spring classes at Compton Art at 29 Central Street in Woodstock, VT (over Footprints) will start up next week. I'll be teaching Textures and Techniques on Tuesday Nights by popular demand. We have five in that class already but room for one or two more if you're interested. Go to www.comptonart.net for details.

Also a NEW CLASS titled "Abstration and Imagination". Here's the synopsis:

Abstraction and Imagination
9:00 AM to Noon starting Wednesday, March 29, 2006
$280 per person, 8 sessions through May 17

While your friends are travelling, take the spring to go on a trip into your imagination. A new class, without specific homework, will focus your drawing and painting into the realm of abstraction. How do you take reality and alter it slightly to come up with expressive paintings? How can you see the world in a new way? This thoughtful approach has been touched on in Compton's book, Drawing from the Mind, Painting from the Heart but now you can take your paintings to a new level. We will move into imaginative perspectives and fantastical color realms to convey interpretive pieces around basic elements of landscape, still life and figurative word. Perfect for those studying Cezanne for the Vermont Watercolor Society Show in May. Exciting for those of you who want to explore whimsical images. Bring paints, paper and your open mind to the first class. Some weeks will include pen & ink, aquarelle pencils and collage as well as off-beat watercolor techniques.

Hope to see you here at the studio this spring.

Woodstock Folk Art Show Results

Update March 23

WOODSTOCK FINE ART GALLERY
We had a lovely reception and a very whimsical show. Nancy Dean came with the brownie doll that is in her painting, peeking out of her bag. The gallery handed out sheets to their patrons with a photo of each painting on it, and they are also all online:

http://www.woodstockfolkart.com/

This show ends March 31.

WOODSTOCK GALERY PICK-UP TIMES:

All works must be picked up by Sunday, April 2. For those of you going to the Spring Meeting , Sunday might work out well. If someone is going through Woodstock and wants to offer to pick up paintings for others at the meeting, that could work also.

Friday, March 31 10-5
Saturday, April 1 10-5
Sunday, April 2 10-5

March 9, 2006
Woodstock Folk Art Show Results

Congratulations to the following artists whose works will be in the "Whimsy" Show at the Woodstock Folk Art Gallery. If your name is not on this list or one of your paintings did not get in, the gallery has very kindly offered to store your work upstairs until you can pick it up. This could be at the opening,( which I hope will be well attended by everyone, even if you are not in the show).... Or,.... you can get your work at a later date if necessary. So you do not have to pick-up tomorrow or Saturday unless it is convenient.

This is a special favor from the gallery, and an unusual one. A little reminder here- gracious thanks to the gallery would be much appreciated from ALL entrants.

The gallery owners would like a little bio from everyone whose work is in the show- just a paragraph or two about who you are, where you live, what your experience might be, and thoughts about your work such as how you like to paint, favorite subjects, etc. You can just send it to them as an email or print it out if you like. I think email would be preferred.

This Gallery goes all out with publicity- there will be sheets passed out with images of our work on them and the images will also be on their web site. They made an excellent suggestion about labeling your paintings- a bio attached to the back would be well received by both galleries and buyers. Let's try to do this in the future.

There were 72 paintings entered by 40 artists. 38 paintings were accepted for the show. One person entered 3 paintings instead of 2. Please read the directions folks!

Send to:
wfolkart@sover.net

Reminder:

Opening Reception is Sunday March 12 , 1-4 PM
see you there!

News from Outside the VWS

PALETTES Project:

As you may recall, Vermont Arts Council
http://www.vermontartscouncil.org/index.php
is sponsoring a HUGE project - passing out wooden palettes for everyone and anyone to paint, decorate, etc. We are still working on a possible show for VWS somewhere- possibly in conjunction with an organization such as Pentangle in Woodstock. I have been experimenting with gluing a watercolor on paper to the palette. It can be done. This could be great fun...and possibly a fund-raiser for VWS. If I see some interest, I could get a bunch of palettes to pass out at our SPRING LUNCHEON - April 2, 2006

LOOKING FOR PALETTES:

Speaking of the Palettes project- I have not seen a lot of interest from the membership for creating a group show, but here's a note from Ben&Jerry's- a possible site for display or an open show. Anyone want to follow through with this idea? It would mean contacting B &G, and organizing the show. I think if it is a Palettes project we could do a bit of fund-raising for VWS and get great publicity as well.

Here is a possible opportunity. Think weather hot enough to make you reach for ice cream instead of your mittens.

Martha Fitch, Director
Vermont Crafts Council

Demonstrations and Sales at Ben & Jerrys

During July and August at our Waterbury Factory we are piloting an outdoor project in which we would like to involve local artisans, entertainers and educators.
Ben & Jerry's can provide a venue (our outside activity lane), a 15 x 15 tent and plenty of summer visitors-typically 2,000 each day in July & August. Vendor requirements would include a certificate of liability and a letter of commitment. The hours of operation would be seven days 10:30-4:30. Vendors would be welcome one day per week or several. At this point the schedule is very flexible. Demonstrations of work is highly encouraged.
If you are interested and would like more information please contact me by phone or email.
Thank you very much!

If this venue is not a possibility, there are many more opportunities, but someone needs to come forward to volunteer to look into this further.
